Changes of the Total Lipid and Omega-3 Fatty Acid Contents in two Microalgae Dunaliella Salina and Chlorella Vulgaris Under Salt Stress BABT
Rismani,Sharare; Shariati,Mansour.
ABSTRACT Effect of salt stress on biomass, cell number, contents of total lipid, omega-3 fatty acids, including ALA (Alpha Linolenic Acid), EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid) and DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid) and their biosynthetic pathway intermediates (palmitic acid, stearic acid, oleic acid and linoleic acid) of two microalgae Dunaliella salina and Chlorella vulgaris were investigated. Dilution stress from 1.5 to 0.5 M NaCl and salt stress from 1.5 to 3 M NaCl were incorporated into the D. salina medium. Salt stress of 200 mM NaCl was also applied to C. vulgaris culture. Results indicated that increasing salt concentration resulted in the reduced growth rate of C. vulgaris and substantial increase of the total lipid content in both species. Proper growth rate of...

ZUGNO,ALEXANDRA I.; CANEVER,LARA; MASTELLA,GUSTAVO; HEYLMANN,ALEXANDRA S.; OLIVEIRA,MARIANA B.; STECKERT,AMANDA V.; CASTRO,ADALBERTO A.; PIZZOL,FELIPE DAL; QUEVEDO,JOÃO; GAMA,CLARISSA S..
ABSTRACTNew studies suggest that polyunsaturated fatty acids, such as omega-3, may reduce the symptoms of schizophrenia. The present study evaluated the preventive effect of omega-3 on interleukines (IL) and neurotrophin brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels in the brains of young rats subjected to a model of schizophrenia. Treatment was performed over 21 days, starting on the 30th day of rat's life. After 14 days of treatment with omega-3 or vehicle, a concomitant treatment with saline or ketamine (25 mg/kg) was started and maintained until the last day of the experiment. BDNF levels in the rat's prefrontal cortex were decreased at 1 h and 24 h after the last administration of ketamine, whereas the group administered with ketamine and omega-3...

Flaxseed flour addition on fatty acid profile and sensory properties of brazilian cheese roll Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Costa,Alessandra; Baraúna,Ana Carolina; Bertin,Renata Labronici; Tavares,Lorena Benathar Ballod.
In recent decades, studies on human nutrition have emphasized the importance of omega-3 and 6 intake. Since flaxseed is a good source for such fatty acids, the aim of this study was to develop a Brazilian cheese roll enriched with flaxseed flour. Three formulations were produced to determine the intensity of some sensory attributes and to set the best composition for conducting a consumer acceptance test. In the selected formulation, it was determined the Brazilian cheese roll's expansion rate, its physico-chemical characteristics, fatty acid composition and acceptance rate. Regarding its flavor and general characteristics, the results showed a good acceptance of the cheese roll enriched with flaxseed flour. The product also presented an omega-6/omega-3...

High levels of docosahexaenoic acid are present in eight New World silversides (Pisces: Atherinopsidae) Neotropical Ichthyology
Martínez-Palacios,Carlos A.; Concha-Santos,Sibila; Toledo-Cuevas,Elva M.; Ríos-Durán,María G.; Martínez-Chávez,Carlos C.; Navarrete-Ramírez,Pamela; Raggi,Luciana; Strussmann,Carlos; Hualde,Juan P.; Demicheli,Mariela A.; Fonseca-Madrigal,Jorge.
ABSTRACT Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is the most critical and least available omega-3 fatty acid in the Western human diet. Currently, the source of omega-3 long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFA) is mainly dependent on wild fisheries, making this resource unsustainable in the foreseeable future. In recent years, a high rate of biosynthesis and accumulation of DHA has been discovered in a freshwater species (Chirostoma estor) belonging to the Atherinopsidae family. Interest in evaluating fatty acid composition in other members of the family has emerged, so this study compiles original data of flesh composition of eight atherinopsid species from freshwater and brackish environments, either wild or cultured. High levels of DHA (16 to 31%) were found...

Molina,Bruna Susan de Labio; Alcalde,Claudete Regina; Hygino,Bruna; Santos,Sérgio Mangano de Almeida; Gomes,Ludmila Couto; Santos,Geraldo Tadeu dos.
According on the fat source included in the diets for goats, the milk production can be increased and milk fatty acid composition can be improved. This study was conducted to evaluate the inclusion of protected fat (CSFA - calcium salts of fatty acids) in the diets of lactating Saanen goats on milk production and composition. Five Saanen goats (63.23 ± 9.08 kg body weight and 105 ± 3 days of lactation) were distributed in a Latin square design (5 × 5) with five diets: control (without the addition of CSFA) and the other diets with: 6.25, 12.50, 18.75 and 25.0 g CSFA per kg dry matter (g/kg DM), respectively. Dry matter intake (DMI) and milk production (MP) were evaluated. Milk samples were collected to determine milk composition and fatty acid profile....

Cedro,TMM; Calixto,LFL; Gaspar,A; Curvello,FA; Hora,AS.
The internal quality of conventional and ω-3 enriched commercial eggs stored at different temperatures was evaluated. Eggs derived from Isa Brown layers fed two different diets. In Group 1, 432 hens were fed throughout their productive life with a diet based on corn and soybean meal (production of conventional eggs). In Group 2, starting at 22 weeks of age, other 432 hens were fed a diet containing 1.5% of marine algae substrate and 1.8% of fish oil (production of ω-3 enriched eggs). The following parameters were evaluated: Haugh unit, yolk index, albumen pH, and yolk pH. There were no significant differences between conventional and enriched with ω-3 eggs as to internal quality parameters. Only the interaction between storage time and temperature was...

THE ROLE OF LABELLING IN CONSUMERS’ FUNCTIONAL FOOD CHOICES AgEcon
Zou, Ning Ning (Helen); Hobbs, Jill E..
Given the credence nature of functional food attributes labelling plays a key role in allowing consumers to make informed choices about foods with enhanced health attributes. The degree to which a particular jurisdiction permits health claims for food products and the type of allowable health claim influence the information set available to consumers. In Canada the regulatory environment governing health claims for functional food products is somewhat more restrictive than in other jurisdictions, including the United States. Food manufacturers therefore also use visual imagery to suggest a health benefit, such as the picture of a red heart to imply that a product has heart health benefits. The paper characterizes these labelling strategies as “partial...
